Lydford Gorge

Lydford, near Tavistock, Devon, EX20 4BH

Lydford Gorge is a dramatic river gorge carved into the western edge of Dartmoor, featuring ancient oak woodland, rare temperate rainforest, and the 30-metre Whitelady Waterfall. Two main walking trails take visitors through steep, rugged terrain, including the swirling Devil’s Cauldron pothole and the remains of a Victorian-era railway.

The gorge is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its unique geology and biodiversity. Its origins date back to the Devonian period, with rocks exposed by tectonic forces and shaped by glacial meltwater. The area is steeped in history, playing a role in Anglo-Saxon, Viking, and Norman periods, and inspiring artists and legends for centuries. Good footwear is essential for exploring the steep, often slippery paths.
